While working through the difficult mourning process after the death of my mom, I resumed the crochet hobby I had long ago set aside. The repetitive hand work has given me a way to focus and allow my mind a body some time to rest. Over time, the mourning comes less often but I figure I will always have moments of deep loss. Hand crochet is a practice I will continue to use. I hope your use of this dishcloth brings you peace as you use it to do your work.
Mourning Dove Crochet
I remember sitting on the porch swing listening to the cooing doves in our big evergreen tree. I commented to mom how sorrowful they sounded, to which she replied “they are in mourning.”
In 2024, a couple months after my mothers death, I took up crochet again. I remember mom making a variety of knitting and crochet projects when I was young. She talked about helping my great-grandma Millie make potholders after grandma had lost her sight. So I picked up a hook to help me mourn her and heal.
